New local series “The Hunt for Baltic Gold” to premiere on HISTORY Poland this spring.

Global media content company A+E Networks® has commissioned a new local series “The Hunt for Baltic Gold” (original title: Złoto Bałtyku). The five-episode series is set to premiere on HISTORY Poland this spring. The show tells the story of people working in the Polish amber industry and was shot in the city of Gdańsk and the Pomeranian Region.

For thousands of years, amber has continued to be the object of desire for hunters roaming the stormy seaside. The earliest known attempts of its treatment date back to the Neolithic era (4500 BC) in the prehistoric period. Records indicate that the Ancients dubbed amber as “the juice of Sun”. In Poland, the cult of amber dates back to the 15th century; this is when amber jewellery handmade by artists in the coastal city of Gdańsk became the most coveted gift among diplomats and members of the Royal, Imperial, Papal and Ottoman Courts. Nowadays, almost 70% of the manufactured amber jewellery in the world is made in Poland. Those who take part in its legal extraction must weather trying conditions like stormy winds and waist-deep mud. Each episode of the series “The Hunt for Baltic Gold” will tell the story of the people that live and breathe amber in their everyday lives. Viewers will get to learn about the long journey that the fossilized tree resin must undergo before it is sold. The series will shed light on the different methods of amber extraction as well as other aspects of the jewellery industry in Poland.

Tomasz Teodorczyk, Director of Content & Brands, Poland + CEE, said "For 5 years now, we’ve continued to commission local shows for HISTORY, because we realize how important and relevant they are for our viewers. This time, we are extremely proud to partner with ATM Group to be the first to provide an inside look into the lives of people that work in the thriving Polish amber industry. It’s worth understanding how tough their job is – whether it consists of treading icy cold sea waters or negotiating jewellery sale deals worth thousands of Polish zloty. Even though amber has a rich tradition and permanent presence in Polish history, many of us do not know a lot about it. We hope that our series will be able to change this."

Krzysztof Jakubowski, Executive Producer, ATM Group said "We took an interest in the amber industry a few years ago and realized that this topic would be ideal for HISTORY. Our new series has all the elements of a great factual show – interesting characters, the fierce Baltic Sea and the pursuit of big money. I’m confident that “The Hunt for Baltic Gold” will prove to be not only an entertaining series but one that has a tangible impact on the perception of the amber industry in Poland. Ultimately, our mission is to highlight the fact that Baltic amber is rightfully so, considered to be the most precious type of amber in the world."

“The Hunt for Baltic Gold” is HISTORY Poland’s fifth local commission in recent years. The show will be directed by Sambor Wilk and produced by ATM Group who were responsible for producing the Polish series “Pick & Bid”. Agnieszka Kubiak, Head of Content Development and Creative at A+E Networks® Poland is the executive producer of the series along with Krzysztof Jakubowski from ATM Group
